St Domingo’s to Everton

Everton were founded in 1878 as St Domingo’s FC and renamed Everton in November 1879. In 1888 the club was a founder member of the Football League.

The move to Goodison Park

In 1892 Everton left Anfield after a rent dispute with the landowner John Houlding, who then formed Liverpool. The club has been in the top flight for most of its history, with relegations in 1930 (promoted straight back) and 1950–51 (back in 1953–54).

The 1980s

Everton won the league in 1984–85 and 1986–87, and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984–85.

Premier League era

Everton were a founder member of the Premier League in 1992. The club received a 10-point deduction on 17 November 2023 for breaching profit and sustainability rules, and Dan Friedkin’s group took over in December 2024.

How many titles have Everton won?

Everton have won nine league titles, five FA Cups and the Cup Winners’ Cup once. The latest league title came in 1986–87 and the latest FA Cup in 1994–95.

Have Everton won a European trophy?

Yes, once. Everton won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1984–85.

That is the club’s only European trophy, and it came in the same season as the league title.

Famous Everton players

Dixie Dean is the club’s top scorer with 383 goals in all competitions. Neville Southall holds the appearance record with 751 matches between 1981 and 1997, ahead of Brian Labone on 534.

Rivalries and supporters

Liverpool are the great rivals, in the Merseyside derby. Supporters are called Evertonians, and the club is also known as the People’s Club.

Betting on Everton

Moyes’ Everton often play tight games, so draw prices are worth a look. Say a bookmaker offers 2.60 on an Everton home win, 3.30 on the draw and 2.85 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 38.5%, 30.3% and 35.1%, which total 103.9%, so the margin is 3.9%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.30 returns €33.00, a €23.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.

Before you bet on a Everton match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.
