Where do Shelbourne play?
Shelbourne play at Tolka Park in Drumcondra, Dublin, which holds about 6,450 people. The ground opened in 1924, and the club has leased it since 1989.
Tolka Park opened in 1924 and hosted its first League of Ireland game on 26 August 1928. The ground has hosted two full Ireland football internationals, both friendlies against Wales, and the 2019 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
The capacity is about 6,450 on current figures. Older sources, including API-Football’s database, still list 9,680, a figure that was cut for health and safety reasons. The Drumcondra Stand, with 800 seats, reopened on 3 April 2026. In late 2025 the club secured a 250-year lease from Dublin City Council, and in May 2026 the club and the Tolka Park Community Hub were reported to have been approved for €9.2 million of state funding for the ground. Shelbourne history
Ringsend roots
Shelbourne were founded in 1895 in Ringsend, Dublin, by a group led by James Rowan, a general labourer. The Reds moved around several grounds, including Shelbourne Park from 1913 to 1949, before settling at Tolka Park. In the early years they won league titles in 1925–26 and 1928–29, and the club went on to win the FAI Cup in 1938–39.
The 1990s and early 2000s
Shels won the league in 1991–92 and followed it with FAI Cups in 1992–93, 1995–96, 1996–97 and 1999–2000, plus the League Cup in 1995–96, won on penalties against Sligo Rovers. The club added league titles in 2001–02, 2003, 2004 and 2006, and Jason Byrne and Wes Hoolahan are among the players from that period. In the 2004–05 Champions League they beat Hajduk Split 4–3 on aggregate to reach the third qualifying round, where they lost to Deportivo La Coruña.
Financial collapse and the road back
The title in 2006 was followed by a financial crisis. Manager Pat Fenlon resigned, most of the players left, and in 2007 the club lost its Premier Division licence because of debts and dropped down a division. The death of majority shareholder Ollie Byrne in August 2007 added to the turmoil. Shelbourne spent years rebuilding in the lower tier before returning to the top flight.
The 2024 title and Europe
The club clinched the 2024 Premier Division title on 1 November 2024 with a 1–0 win at Derry City, its first league championship since 2006. In August 2025 Shelbourne beat Linfield 5–1 on aggregate to reach the 2025–26 Conference League league phase for the first time, and a third-place finish in the 2025 league secured European football for 2026–27.
How many titles have Shelbourne won?
Shelbourne have won 14 Premier Division titles, the latest in 2024, plus seven FAI Cups and one League of Ireland Cup.
League title years named in the sources we cite are 1925–26, 1928–29, 1931, 1944–45, 1947, 1953, 1991–92, 2001–02, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2024, so the full list of 14 is not set out in one place. The FAI Cup wins came in 1938–39, 1959–60, 1962–63, 1992–93, 1995–96, 1996–97 and 1999–2000. Shelbourne also won the Irish Cup three times (1906, 1911 and 1920) and the League of Ireland Cup once, in 1995–96.
Famous Shelbourne players
Tony Dunne played for Shelbourne before he won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968. Eric Barber holds the club record with 126 league goals. Jason Byrne won Republic of Ireland caps and topped the scoring charts in European competition for the club, with eight goals. Wes Hoolahan, Val Harris, Joe Haverty and Stephen Geoghegan are also among the best-known names.
Rivalries and supporters
The biggest rivalry is with Bohemians, whose Dalymount Park is about a mile from Tolka Park. Shelbourne also meet St Patrick’s Athletic in a Dublin derby, and the Ringsend derby with Shamrock Rovers goes back to the two clubs’ shared origins. The Briogáid Dearg ultras formed in 2003, Reds Independent has been going since 1998 and publishes the fanzine Red Inc, and the 1895 Trust is the supporters’ trust, launched in 2013. The average home league attendance in 2025 was 4,562.
Betting on Shelbourne
Shels have drawn a lot of games this season, so the draw market is worth understanding. Say a bookmaker offers 2.40 on a Shelbourne home win, 3.30 on the draw and 3.00 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 41.7%, 30.3% and 33.3%, which total 105.3%, so the margin is 5.3%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.30 returns €33, a €23 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.
Before you bet on a Shelbourne match, check whether the team is rotating for a European tie, and whether a late goalkeeper change has affected the line-up. Lineups are announced about an hour before kick-off, and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.
