St Patrick’s Athletic history

Founding and the early titles

The Saints were founded in May 1929 in Inchicore. They joined the League of Ireland in 1951–52 and won the title at the first attempt, adding more in 1954–55 and 1955–56. The first FAI Cup came in 1958–59.

Brian Kerr and the 1990s

Under Brian Kerr the club won the league in 1989–90, its first title in 34 years. The club came close to extinction in 1992 before investors saved it, and it returned to Richmond Park in 1993. Titles followed in 1995–96, 1997–98, 1998–99 and 2001–02, although the 2001–02 title is disputed. Shelbourne were named champions after a points deduction, and Pats dispute that.

Cups and the Kenny era

Garrett Kelleher became chairman in 2007. The club won the league in 2013 and ended a 53-year wait for the FAI Cup in 2014. More FAI Cups came in 2021 and 2023, and the team finished third in 2024 under Stephen Kenny.

Betting on St Patrick’s Athletic

Pats are near the top of the table this season, so favourite-and-underdog pricing matters. Say a bookmaker offers 1.90 on a Pats home win, 3.50 on the draw and 4.00 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 52.6%, 28.6% and 25.0%, which total 106.2%, so the margin is 6.2%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.50 returns €35.00, a €25.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.

Before you bet on a St Patrick’s Athletic match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move.
