Where do Derry City play?

Derry City play at the Brandywell in Derry. Sources disagree on the capacity: the Wikipedia infobox gives 6,242, API-Football lists 7,000, and Wikipedia’s text gives 7,700 on a normal match day with 2,900 seats for UEFA competitions.

The Brandywell is moving towards outright ownership. In 2025 the club agreed a 25-year lease, which the council approved unanimously, and which allows Stormont grant funding to complete the second phase of the Mark Farren stand. Home games were played at Maginn Park in Buncrana in 2017 during renovation work.

The record League of Ireland attendance at the ground is 9,800, for an FAI Cup tie against Finn Harps in 1986. The highest league crowd listed is 6,080 against Cork City. Tickets are sold through the club’s official site.

Derry City history

The Irish League years

Derry City were founded in 1928 and joined the Irish League in 1929. They won the Irish League in 1964–65 and played in Europe for the first time that season. In 1971–72 they were forced to play home games in Coleraine, and they withdrew from the Irish League in October 1972.

Joining the League of Ireland

The club joined the League of Ireland in 1985, won the First Division, and completed a treble in 1988–89 with the Premier Division, FAI Cup and League Cup. A second title followed in 1996–97.

Survival and the 2022 FAI Cup

Derry survived near-bankruptcy in 2000 and received a UEFA Premier licence in 2004. They were expelled in November 2009, reinstated and demoted, and won the First Division in 2010. In 2022 they won the FAI Cup, with more than 20,000 supporters at the final.

Recent years

Tiernan Lynch was appointed on 20 November 2024. The club finished second of ten in 2025 and agreed the new Brandywell lease the same year.

How many titles have Derry City won?

Have Derry City played in Europe?

Yes. Derry first played in Europe in 1964–65 and were the first Irish League team to win a two-legged European tie, beating Lyn of Norway 8–6 on aggregate in the 1965–66 European Cup.

Other notable ties include a 6–1 aggregate defeat to Benfica in 1989–90, and in 2006–07 a 7–3 aggregate win over Gretna before a 2–0 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Cup. In 2014–15 they beat Aberystwyth Town 9–0 on aggregate in the Europa League qualifiers, and in 2024–25 they lost 3–2 on aggregate to Bruno’s Magpies in the Conference League.

Famous Derry City players

Mark Farren is the club’s top scorer in the League of Ireland with 114 goals, and his number 18 shirt is retired. Peter Hutton holds the League of Ireland appearance record with more than 660, and Paul Curran made 518. Jimmy Kelly is the all-time top scorer with 363 goals between 1930 and 1951, and Billy Gillespie, the most-capped player with 25 Ireland caps, became player-manager in 1932. Ryan McBride’s number 5 shirt is also retired.

Rivalries and supporters

The main rivalry is with Finn Harps in the north-west derby. Derry are supporter owned, and the club’s supporters are known for their numbers: the average home attendance of 3,127 in 2006 was the highest in the league that season.

Betting on Derry City

Derry are a mid-table side with a new interim manager, so match-result prices can be closer than the league table suggests. Say a bookmaker offers 2.20 on a Derry home win, 3.30 on the draw and 3.40 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 45.5%, 30.3% and 29.4%, which total 105.2%, so the margin is 5.2%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.30 returns €33.00, a €23.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.

Before you bet on a Derry City match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.
