Sunderland history

Teachers to Sunderland AFC

Sunderland began in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers AFC, was formally created on 25 September 1880 and renamed Sunderland AFC in October 1880. The founder was the schoolmaster James Allan.

Six league titles

Sunderland joined the Football League for 1890–91 and won the league in 1891–92. The six top-flight titles came in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913 and 1936.

The fall

Sunderland were first relegated from the top flight after 1956–57, to the Third Division in 1987, and from the Premier League in 1997, 2003 (19 points) and 2005 (15 points, a record low). They went down again in 2017 and to League One in 2018.

Louis-Dreyfus and the return

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus completed his takeover on 18 February 2021. Sunderland won the 2025 Championship play-off final 2–1 against Sheffield United on 24 May 2025 and returned to the Premier League.

How many titles have Sunderland won?

Sunderland have won six top-flight league titles and two FA Cups. The latest title came in 1936 and the latest FA Cup in 1973.

The club won the FA Cup in 1937 and 1973, and the FA Charity Shield in 1936. Sunderland have never won the League Cup and lost the finals in 1985 and 2014.

Have Sunderland played in Europe?

Once so far. Sunderland played in the 1973–74 Cup Winners’ Cup and lost 3–2 on aggregate to Sporting CP.

Finishing seventh in 2025–26 earned a Europa League place for 2026–27, according to Wikipedia.

Famous Sunderland players

Charlie Buchan is the club’s top league scorer with 209 goals between 1911 and 1925, and Bobby Gurney scored 228 in all competitions. Jimmy Montgomery holds the league appearance record with 527 between 1961 and 1976.

Rivalries and supporters

Newcastle United are the main rivals, in the Tyne–Wear derby played since 1898, and Middlesbrough in the Tees–Wear derby. Supporters are called Mackems.

Betting on Sunderland

Sunderland have been strong at home, so check the draw price too. Say a bookmaker offers 2.60 on a Sunderland home win, 3.30 on the draw and 2.85 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 38.5%, 30.3% and 35.1%, which total 103.9%, so the margin is 3.9%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.30 returns €33.00, a €23.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.

Before you bet on a Sunderland match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.

Our AI predictions track record logs every pick we make, hit or miss, and our Premier League predictions and odds guide explains how to use predictions without treating them as certainties.
