Patent Calculator: Returns on a 7-Bet Patent

Home » Patent Calculator: Returns on a 7-Bet Patent

This Patent calculator works out your returns on a Patent bet before you place it. Enter the odds for three selections, set each as a winner or a loser and see the total stake, return and profit. You can switch to a Trixie to compare the two.

Quick answer
  • A Patent is 7 bets on 3 selections: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble.
  • The stake is per bet. A €5 Patent costs €35, and an each-way Patent has 14 bets.
  • One winner is enough to get something back, which a Trixie does not give you.

Pick Patent in the menu, enter your three prices and set the results to see what the slip pays.

What is a Patent bet?

A Patent is a full-cover bet on three selections in different events. It places seven bets: three singles, three doubles and a treble. Because the singles are included, you are paid if only one of the three wins, although the return may not cover the whole stake.

Worked example: a €5 Patent

Three selections at 2/1 (3.0), 3/1 (4.0) and evens (2.0), with €5 on each of the seven bets, so a total stake of €35.

If all three win, the singles pay 3 + 4 + 2 = 9, the doubles pay 26 and the treble pays 24, a total of 59. Multiplied by €5, the return is €295, a profit of €260.

ResultReturnProfit or loss
All three win€295+€260
2/1 and 3/1 win€95+€60
3/1 and evens win€70+€35
2/1 and evens win€55+€20
Only 3/1 wins€20-€15
Only 2/1 wins€15-€20
Only evens wins€10-€25

One winner returns something, but at these prices it is less than the €35 stake, so you still lose overall.

How many winners do you need in a Patent?

One winner gives a return, but you usually need at least two to cover the stake of seven units, unless the single winner is at long odds. All three winners pay all seven bets.

Patent or Trixie?

A Trixie covers the same three selections with four bets and no singles, so it costs four units instead of seven. The Patent costs more because of the extra singles, but it pays when only one selection wins. Use our Trixie calculator to compare the same slip. For four selections, see the Yankee calculator or Lucky 15 calculator.

Each-way Patent

An each-way Patent has 14 bets, seven for the win and seven for the place, so the stake is double. Our each way calculator and each-way guide explain place terms.

Where Patents are used

Patents suit a few strong selections, such as three horses on a card or three football results. See the horse racing betting guide and the football betting guide. The bet types guide compares the full set of bets, and the bet calculator handles bigger ones.

What this calculator leaves out

This calculator is a guide only. It does not apply Rule 4 deductions, dead heats, bonuses, boosts, early-payout offers or bet builders, and bookmakers can round or settle slightly differently. Check your slip and the bookmaker’s terms before you rely on a figure. Our bet calculator has a section on Rule 4 and dead heats.

Frequently asked questions

How many bets are in a Patent?

Seven: three singles, three doubles and one treble on three selections.

How much does a Patent cost?

The stake is per bet, so a €5 Patent costs €35. An each-way Patent has 14 bets and costs double.

What is the difference between a Patent and a Trixie?

A Trixie has four bets and no singles. A Patent adds three singles, making seven bets.

Do you get paid if only one selection wins in a Patent?

Yes, because the singles pay. The return may be less than your total stake, depending on the odds.

Is a Patent the same as a Lucky 7?

Some people use that name, but the standard name for a seven-bet cover of three selections is a Patent.
