Brentford history
Founding
Brentford was founded on 10 October 1889 and elected to the Football League in 1920. The nickname the Bees is said to come from a misheard chant of “Buck up Bs” in 1894–95.
The 1930s peak
After promotion in 1934–35, Brentford finished fifth in the First Division in 1935–36, the club’s highest league finish for decades.
Survival
In 1967 a plan by QPR would have moved Brentford to Hillingdon and ended the club, but a supporter-backed syndicate took control. The supporters’ trust Bees United took over in 2002.
The Benham years
Matthew Benham fully bought the club in 2012. Brentford were promoted to the Championship in 2014 and returned to the top flight in 2021 by beating Swansea in the play-off final, their first top-flight season since 1946–47.

Betting on Brentford
Brentford often play close games, so the draw price matters. Say a bookmaker offers 2.50 on a Brentford home win, 3.50 on the draw and 2.80 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 40.0%, 28.6% and 35.7%, which total 104.3%, so the margin is 4.3%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.50 returns €35.00, a €25.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.
Before you bet on a Brentford match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.
