Where do Newcastle United play?

Newcastle play at St James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne. Wikipedia gives the capacity as 52,264 in its infobox and 52,305 in the text, so treat any single figure as approximate.

The club has played there since 1892, and the ground was redeveloped between 1900 and 1905. Safe-standing areas were introduced after the 2022–23 season, ending the all-seater era that began in 1993.

Tickets are sold through the club’s official site.

Newcastle United history

Stanley to Newcastle United

The club was founded on 15 November 1881 as Stanley FC. It became Newcastle East End in October 1882 and took the name Newcastle United in 1892, joining the Football League in 1893.

Early honours

Newcastle won the FA Cup for the first time in 1910, and four top-flight titles, the latest in 1926–27. The club won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968–69.

Ups and downs

Newcastle were relegated from the top flight in 1934, 2009 and 2016, and won promotion at the first attempt in 2010 and 2017. Mike Ashley owned the club from 2007 until 2021.

The PIF takeover

The consortium led by the Public Investment Fund completed its takeover on 7 October 2021 for a reported £305 million. Newcastle beat Liverpool 2–1 in the League Cup final on 16 March 2025.

How many titles have Newcastle United won?

Newcastle have won four top-flight titles, six FA Cups and the League Cup once. The latest league title came in 1926–27, the latest FA Cup in 1955 and the League Cup in 2024–25.

The club also won the Second Division title in 1992–93 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006. The 1992–93 title was won in the second tier, so it is not counted among the four top-flight titles.

Have Newcastle United won a European trophy?

Yes. Newcastle won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968–69 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006.

The Fairs Cup is the forerunner of the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League.

Famous Newcastle United players

Alan Shearer is the club’s top scorer with 206 goals in all competitions between 1996 and 2006. Jimmy Lawrence holds the appearance record with 496 first-team games between 1904 and 1921.

Rivalries and supporters

Sunderland are the great rivals, in the Tyne–Wear derby, and Middlesbrough in the Tyne–Tees derby. Supporters are known as the Toon Army.

Betting on Newcastle United

A new head coach can mean unsettled early prices, so compare carefully. Say a bookmaker offers 2.05 on a Newcastle home win, 3.50 on the draw and 3.60 on the away win. Those prices imply chances of 48.8%, 28.6% and 27.8%, which total 105.1%, so the margin is 5.1%. A €10 bet on the draw at 3.50 returns €35.00, a €25.00 profit. The prices are illustrative, not a quote. Our guide to how betting odds work walks through the sums.

Before you bet on a Newcastle United match, check for team news, because line-ups are announced about an hour before kick-off and prices often move. Our bet types guide explains markets such as draw no bet and both teams to score, and the free bets guide explains why offers rarely pay what the headline suggests.

Our AI predictions track record logs every pick we make, hit or miss, and our Premier League predictions and odds guide explains how to use predictions without treating them as certainties.
