The Premier League table below shows the live standings, updated every few hours, with the top scorers underneath. Use it to see who leads the title race, who is chasing the Champions League and who is fighting to stay up.
This guide also explains how the table works: points, the European places, relegation and how to read the table sensibly if you are thinking of placing a bet. The official table is on premierleague.com, and it is the final word if the two ever differ.
- Format: 20 clubs play each other home and away, 38 matches each.
- Points: three for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat.
- Europe: the top finishers qualify for the Champions League, usually the top four, with the next places in the Europa League and Conference League. UEFA can award England an extra place, so check the league’s announcements.
- Down: the bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship.
Premier League table
Clubs are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. The league’s own rules set out any further tie-breaks.
How do you read the Premier League table?
Each row shows the games played (P), wins (W), draws (D), defeats (L), goal difference (GD) and points (Pts). A win is worth three points and a draw one. The form column shows the last five results, with the most recent on the right: green for a win, grey for a draw and red for a defeat.
The table only tells you where clubs stand, not what will happen next. A club on a winning run can still lose to a side with nothing to play for, and fixtures that have been moved for European games mean some clubs have played fewer matches than others. Compare the games-played column before you compare points.
What does each Premier League position mean?
- 1st, champions: the Premier League title and a Champions League place.
- 2nd to 4th: Champions League qualification.
- 5th: usually a Europa League place, although extra Champions League places and cup winners can change this.
- 6th to 17th: mid-table, with no automatic consequence.
- 18th to 20th: relegated to the Championship.
The colours in the table follow these places. European football brings prize money and prestige, and relegation costs a club a large share of its television income, so the bottom of the table is often as tense as the top.
Premier League top scorers
The chart shows the goals leaders this season. The Golden Boot race is a popular betting market, and penalty takers tend to climb the list.
Using the Premier League table when you bet
The table is a starting point, not a prediction. Look at goal difference and the form column rather than only points, and at what is at stake: a club chasing Europe or avoiding relegation may be more motivated than one safely in mid-table.
Bookmaker prices already reflect the table, plus a margin. Add up the implied chances of all three outcomes and the total exceeds 100%, and the excess is the margin. Our guide to how betting odds work explains the sums, and the bet types guide covers markets such as double chance and draw no bet.
