Galway Races 2027 Betting Guide: Dates, Plate and Hurdle

Home » Galway Races 2027 Betting Guide: Dates, Plate and Hurdle

The Galway Races Summer Festival is the biggest race meeting in Ireland outside the spring jump festivals, and one of the most-backed weeks of the summer. Seven days of racing at Ballybrit, County Galway, run from Monday 26 July to Sunday 1 August 2027, built around two feature days: the Galway Plate on the Wednesday and the Galway Hurdle on Ladies Day, the Thursday. This guide covers the key days, how Galway Races odds and markets work, each-way terms with a euro example and what to check before you bet. It is not a tipping service, and no horse is a banker.

Quick answer
  • The 2027 festival runs from Monday 26 July to Sunday 1 August at Ballybrit Racecourse.
  • The Galway Plate is a handicap chase over about 2 miles 6 furlongs on Wednesday 28 July, and the Galway Hurdle is a two-mile handicap hurdle on Thursday 29 July.
  • Big-field handicaps and changing summer ground make results hard to predict, so many punters stick to small each-way stakes.
  • Check each-way places and the non-runner rules before you bet.

What is the Galway Plate?

The Galway Plate, the festival’s “Blue Riband”, is a handicap chase over 2 miles 6 furlongs 111 yards, run on the Wednesday. In 2026 the winner’s prize was €162,000. It is a competitive big-field race that attracts ante-post interest from Irish punters every year, and it has a record of throwing up winners at a decent price. It rewards stamina and jumping fluency over out-and-out class.

What is the Galway Hurdle?

The Galway Hurdle is a two-mile handicap hurdle run on Ladies Day. It was also worth €162,000 to the winner in 2026. Like the Plate, it is a big-field race in which the handicapper has levelled the form, which regularly produces surprise results and heavy each-way interest. Past winners have included Overturn in 2010 and Sharjah in 2018.

What is Ladies Day at the Galway Races?

Ladies Day is on the Thursday, 29 July 2027, the same day as the Galway Hurdle. It combines the week’s biggest hurdle race with the festival’s fashion centrepiece and is among the best-attended days. If you plan to go rather than just bet, expect bigger crowds and busier betting.

What are the main Galway Races betting markets?

Outright winner

Backing a horse to win a race. Prices often move on the day as ground and market information change.

Each-way

Big-field festival handicaps often have more places and a bigger fraction than a standard race, but this varies by bookmaker. Example: €5 each-way (€10 total) on a 16/1 horse in the Galway Hurdle with a fifth of the odds for five places. If it wins, the win part pays €80 profit and the place part pays €16 profit (a fifth of 16/1 is 3.2/1), so you receive €106 including stakes. If it places only, the place part returns €21 and you lose the €5 win stake, so you are €11 up. If unplaced, you lose €10. Work out your own returns with the each-way calculator.

Forecast and tricast

Forecasts and tricasts require you to predict the first two or three home. They are popular on big-field handicaps. Odds are long, and the bet loses if you get the order wrong.

Festival specials

Some bookmakers run Galway-specific offers during festival week, such as extra places or money-back deals. Always read the small print, and see our free bets guide for how stake-not-returned and expiry rules work.

Why is Galway hard to predict?

Ballybrit is a tight, undulating track, and the Plate and the Hurdle regularly attract large, competitive fields where the form is levelled by the handicapper. Summer ground in Galway can change quickly with Atlantic weather, so the declared going on the day matters more than a forecast made a week out. Big fields and changeable ground often produce surprise results at longer prices.

What are the risks with ante-post Galway bets?

Ante-post prices taken well before festival week are usually bigger than prices closer to the day. In most ante-post markets you lose your stake if a horse is withdrawn, does not run or misses the final field in a big handicap. Some bookmakers offer non-runner no bet closer to the day, usually at shorter prices. Check the terms before you back early. On the day, a Rule 4 deduction may apply to winning bets if another horse is withdrawn. Our horse racing guide explains Rule 4 and non-runners.

What should you check before betting at Galway?

  • The going on the day, not just the forecast.
  • Draw and pace on the straight course and in big-field races.
  • Weights and handicap marks, and whether a horse is rated higher than when it last won.
  • Recent form and fitness. Many Galway horses run often over the summer.
  • Trainer and jockey form at the festival.
  • Bookmaker terms, including extra places, best odds guaranteed and non-runner rules.

Betting at the track or online

If you go to Ballybrit you will see racecourse bookmakers as well as the totalisator. Racecourse bookmakers need a Course Betting Permit from Horse Racing Ireland, which is only given to people who hold a bookmaker’s licence. Prices on the course and online can differ, so compare before you bet. Online you can place bets from your phone without leaving the stand, but be careful about stakes in a busy, social setting, where it is easy to bet more than you intended. Take a set amount of cash or set a deposit limit in your app before you leave home.

A budget for a seven-day festival

Seven days of racing, with a long drive or a few nights away, can be expensive even before you place a bet. Work out your total spend on travel, tickets and betting, and set aside a fixed betting budget for each day. If you reach your limit, stop. A small each-way stake on a few races is a more sensible approach than a large bet on the Plate or the Hurdle.

Where can you bet on the Galway Races in Ireland?

Bet only with a bookmaker licensed for Irish customers. See betting sites in Ireland, how to check a bookmaker is licensed, and bet types explained if each-way betting on big-field handicaps is new to you. The bet calculator works out returns before you place anything.

Bet responsibly during the festival

Big race weeks encourage bigger stakes, more bets and longer sessions than a normal card. Set a budget before you start, decide your maximum loss for each day and stick to it. Do not chase losses, do not bet to unlock an offer, and never use money that you need for bills. Most bookmakers licensed for Irish customers offer deposit limits and time-outs, and you should set them before the first race.
